Oxford Urology

The goal of the Oxford American Handbook of Urology is to create a concise source of clinical information for medical students and physicians in training. This Handbook primarily presents the nonsurgical aspects of urology— the information needed for making a rapid diagnosis and determining the proper initial treatment course amid the confi nes of a busy clinical practice. It is meant to be a practical pocket reference, not an exhaustive treatise on urology. As we witness the rapid pace of advancement in urological surgery, it

becomes ever more diffi cult for any urologist to stay current in all areas of our specialty. The Handbook aims to provide the reader with an effi cient information source that will be helpful in guiding effective management of our growing population of urological patients. The book is written for our patients, with appreciation for the many mentors from whom we have learned, and for the many students and residents we have been fortunate to train. It is adapted for the American practice of urology from the Oxford Handbook of Urology, published in the UK, and we thank John Reynard, Simon Brewster, and Suzanne Biers for

their fi ne book and the opportunity to “Americanize” it. We dedicate this book to our colleague and friend, John P. Stein, M.D., whose untimely death has left a large void in our specialty. He was an accomplished clinician, researcher, and teacher who will be sorely missed.

General Urology

Smith’s General Urology, 16th Edition, provides in a concise format the information necessary for the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases managed by urologic surgeons. Our goal has been to keep the book current, to the point, and readable. Medical students will find this book useful because of its concise, easy-to-follow format and organization and its breadth of information. Interns and residents, as well as practicing physicians in urology or general medicine, will find it an efficient and current reference, particularly because of its emphasis on diagnosis and treatment. The 16th edition is a thorough revision of the book. No new chapters have been added. However, three chapters were completely rewritten by new authors: Chapter 13: Bacterial Infections of the Genitourinary Tract, Hiep T. Nguyen, MD; Chapter 29: Disorders of the Adrenal Glands, Christopher J. Kane, MD; and Chapter 41: Abnormalities of Sexual Determination & Differentiation, Laurence S. Baskin, MD. The total number of chapters has been reduced to 43, as we eliminated one chapter (Urologic Laser Surgery) and incorporated six others in related chapters. To these, and to all our ongoing contributors, we are deeply indebted. The book has been reviewed and updated throughout, with emphasis on current references. The several hundred illustrations have been further modernized and improved, including many fine anatomic drawings and the latest imaging techniques. Since the 11th Edition, the following translations have been published: Chinese, French, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. Atlas Of Urology

Urology is one of the fastest developing of specialties, but the main aim here is to provide a source reference for many of the conditions and means of investigating them that are encountered and used within the context of everyday urological practice. One of the consultants I worked for during the early stages of my training was always keen to point out that urological problems are regularly encountered in many other specialties

as a consequence of a wide variety of disease processes, not least of which is the realm of the community care and general practitioner, and it is with this thought in mind that this book has been put together.

This volume is aimed at as wide a readership interested in the discipline of urology as possible, from the medical student encountering the specialty for the first time to the expert keen for some up-to-date images of common urological conditions. The aim has been to provide a readable, userfriendly text looking at the major areas dealt with by urology as a specialty, accompanied by illustrations. The book begins with a look at renal function – its measurement and the assessment of its impairment, before moving on to look at the investigation and diagnosis of urinary tract infection. The management of lower urinary tract symptoms or LUTS as this spectrum of presenting complaints is known, is dealt with in a separate chapter, followed by a look at the investigation of stone disease. The next section of the book looks at the presentation and investigation of common urological malignancies in chapters covering prostate, bladder and renal cancer. Testicular cancer is dealt with in the following chapter, which also takes a look at common benign scrotal conditions. Finally, the book is rounded off by a summary of the investigations and assessment techniques used in patients with erectile dysfunction.
